HEAD AND NECK CANCER

Most head and neck cancers begin in the cells that line the mucosal surfaces in the head and neck area, e.g., mouth, nose, and throat. Mucosal surfaces are moist linings of hollow organs and cavities of the body. Normal mucosal cells look like scales (squamous) under the microscope, so head & neck cancers are often referred to as squamous cell carcinomas. Some head & neck cancers begin in glandular cells and are called adenocarcinomas.

LIVER CANCER

Liver cancer is a growing cause of casualties in India and the world. Like all cancers, liver cancer can also be attributed to the uncharacteristic rise in cell reproduction. When more cells are produced than needed, tumours, which can be either benign or malignant, are formed. The benign tumours are relatively harmless, as they can be eliminated from the system. On the other hand, malignant tumours are hard to deal with and escalate into cancer. These tumours multiply at a rapid pace and spread to distant body parts via blood and lymph nodes.

BREAST CANCER

Over the last ten years, Breast Cancer has been rising steadily and now it is the most common cancer in women in India. An age-adjusted rate is as high as 25.8 per 100,000 women and mortality 12.7 per 100,000 women. With the advent of effective screening modalities, it is now possible to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage. The five-year survival rate of breast cancer detected at the earliest stage is more than 90%.

MOUTH CANCER

Mouth Cancer, more often referred to as Oral Cancer, is an anomalous growth of malignant cells in any part of the mouth, be it tongue surface, inner cheeks surface, palate, gums or lips. Though the origin of the disease remains a mystery, certain modifiable behaviours like tobacco and alcohol consumption may turn out to be the risk factors. The other prominent contributing factors may include lack of oral hygiene, malnutrition, certain chronic infections, exposure to radiation and misfit dentures. Generally, a physician will conduct a series of physical oral exams biopsies and imaging to determine the medical condition and its severity.

THROAT CANCER

Throat Cancer is a medical condition with consequences. Like all cancers, throat cancer is also a result of aberrant rise in cell reproduction leading to tumours that spread to distant sites via blood vessels. The throat cancers originate in and infect vocal cords, voice box, along with oropharynx and tonsils. The throat cancers are categorized on the basis of origin and impact. A majority of throat cancers fall in the category of Squamous Cell Carcinomas for they originate in Squamous Cells present on the inner throat surface. Adenocarcinoma, the less frequent type of throat cancer, initiates from the glandular cells of the throat. Though throat cancer is relatively infrequent vis-à-vis its counterparts, the cases are on the rise in recent years.
